The extended explanation of the aerodynamics of the holes of the padel racket was explained by a study by Francisco Huera-Huarte, researcher at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV)

The padel racket is the fundamental tool of a padel player, and one of the aspects that pampers and tries to care for, is his shovel. There are many brands designs and colors, but there is a common denominator in all of them, and this is none other than the holes they present.

I’m sure a lot of people wonder what these curious overtures are for, they’ll usually be told that it’s to improve the aerodynamics of the shovel and have greater stability.

This is one of the most widespread reasons in the sport environment, but the truth is that this claim is wrong.

Francisco Huera-Huarte, researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Laboratory of Fluid-Structure Interaction of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) of Tarragona, determined in a study published in the scientific journal Journal of Sports Engineering and Technology, that padel blade holes not only do not improve aerodynamics, but worsen it.

Distribution of holes

Huera-Huarte showed that the holes scattered throughout the shovel had no impact on aerodynamics, moreover, those located in the central part of it make it worse. On the other hand, the only aerodynamic benefit that it was able to demonstrate in the holes found in the external parts, but its improvement is not very relevant, so the presence of the central overtures mitigates the scarce benefits of these.

In addition, the study has found that stability is also impaired. This would suggest that the ideal is to use a shovel without holes in the center and only in the external parts, but to this day it does not seem easy to find any with these characteristics, since innovation in these utensils always goes through other aspects and not that of the holes.

Blades without holes

What can be found on the market, although not in large quantities, are shovels made without holes. This mostly affects the weight of it, being heavier, obviously the one that does not have them. These are a good option for players who enjoy enough strength to drag them, as they will be able to connect more powerful hits.

Therefore, one of the aspects in which if holes are involved is in weight. Players with less physical potency should opt for lifelong shovels, as being less heavy they will be more manageable and manage to prevent muscle problems.

Less durability

Francisco Huera-Huarte concluded that not only aerodynamics and stability is compromised with holes, but also the life of the shovel is affected. These cause the impacts with the ball in the immediate part of the overtures to deteriorate until they break.
