In this interview, Marta Marrero, number 1 player of the World Padel Tour, has attended to our colleague Javier Rosado. The player from Las Palmas has told us about her time at Cervezas Victoria Marbella Máster and her objectives in this new stage with Paula Jose María. You can’t miss it!

  • You and Marta Ortega finished last year as the number one couple in the world. Why did you decide to separate?

Last year was a very good season where Martita and I achieved the goal of being the number one couple in the world.

At a certain moment I decided to separate from Hiromi because I felt that I needed a project where I could train with my partner on a daily basis.

Female padel has evolved a lot and it is very important that a couple can work daily together so that there can be a total adaptation.

  • What are your goals for 2020?

Above all, enjoy on the court, keep improving my game and get to be the number 1 couple in the WPT ranking with Paula José María at the end of the season.

  • Why did you choose Paula Jose Maria as a partner to play with you this year? What would you highlight about her as a partner?

Two years ago Paula and I played a team competition together, that’s when I could see her potential.

Last year she was the most progressive player on the circuit. She has talent, ambition and confidence on the track. I think we can make a dangerous couple.

  • How do you rate your first tournament together?

The result was very positive. But at the level of play there was no regularity, there were moments when we were good and others when we were bad.

We have to keep working to make those bad times as few as possible. In the semi-final we had a very tough game against Gemma and Lucia where we could have lost perfectly. In the final we played better, especially in the third set.

  • How do you see the professional circuit? What couple do you see as your favourites to win the number 1 this season?

The circuit is very evenly matched, as you’d expect. You can see that the players have worked very hard because there is a lot of level.

I think there are a lot of favorite couples this year, it’s going to be more even than ever.

  • What message would you give to padel fans in these difficult days of quarantine in their homes due to the expansion of Covid 19 in Spain?

Patience and optimism. You have to try to keep busy. I advise you to watch a lot of padel and exercise at home. Currently, I am posting physical exercises and padel on my social networks.

We have to stay home. Strength and all my love for those who are sick or have lost their loved ones.
