The former world number one, Fernando Belasteguín, will play one more year next to Agustín Tapia, the young star who has managed to get the oldest player in the history of padel (16 years in a row) to play next to the drive.

In this interview with Daniel Gamarra, ‘Bela’ tells us what his goals are for this season, how he sees the World Padel Tour circuit and the reality of his recent signing with Wilson.

  • What are your goals this year?

The goal is to be able to complete the entire season. I’ve just had two very difficult years because of injuries and I’ve managed to get through them as best I can.

That’s why, for me, the goal this year is to be able to play all 18 tournaments and qualify for the master’s degree.

  • Why have you decided to continue with Agustín Tapia as a sport couple?

I continue with Agustín Tapia as a couple because that is the commitment we made last year.

I’m very excited to play with such a young boy I have to play with on the right. A position where I still have to learn a lot of things and that makes me very excited.

In addition, Agustin has won my heart and respect for the efforts he has made last year to come and train with me (last year he came from Granollers to Barcelona to train daily by train, which takes about 1 hour and a half)

All this makes me keep betting on this project, beyond the fact that Agustín plays padel very well.

  • How do you rate last sport season?

The season was very strange. It was the first time in my career that I changed partners mid-season.

I made this decision because I felt that Pablo Lima and I were playing without passion. I think it was the best decision for both of us.

I think time proved us right, as we both did well with our respective partners. It was a good decision.

  • What have you improved most in the last few years? Are you a different player?

In the last few years, I’ve improved in all aspects of the game. Today, I’m a much more complete player than I was in the past.

The day I feel like I’m not getting better by going to training, that’s the day I’ll retire.

  • How do you see the circuit? Are we at the highest level of padel in the history of this sport?

The World Padel Tour circuit is surpassed year after year, padel continues to grow every day.

“I believe that every year padel is surpassed, so I have no doubt that 2020 will be the best year in the history of this sport”

Fernando Belasteguín

In the same way, I want to say that the level of play today will be much lower than it will be in five or ten years.

The day that doesn’t happen will be the day when the players stop improving and the sport stagnates. Although I sincerely believe that this will not happen, padel is growing and has a great future ahead of it.

  • Which couples do you think are the toughest on the circuit?

All couples are very tough and I respect them all, as I know the invisible work behind each one of them.

  • Will you still be playing on the drive this year?

Yeah, I’m gonna keep playing drive this 2020. Playing in this position motivates me a lot because I still have to learn a lot on this side of the track.

Continuing to learn is what motivates me to keep throwing myself headfirst at every ball in every game.

  • How are you coping with your new phase with Wilson?

The stage with Wilson I face with a very big illusion.

Wilson conquered me because he told me that he wanted to make this sport great, he wanted padel to be known worldwide.

“I will always be on the side of those who bet on padel. It’s a very exciting stage and project for me”

Fernando Belasteguín
